Out of nothing but the governmentâs desperation, a few bold men conjured a giant ship-building industry in 1940 and launched the ships that took America to war and to victory. In 1940, the shadow of war loomed large over American life. President Roosevelt understood that it wasnât a matter of if the United States would be pulled into battle, but when. He foresaw a ânew kind of war,â one that hinged on efforts at home. Long before the attack on Pearl Harbor, German U-boats were relentlessly attacking American vessels, prompting Roosevelt to launch a monumental ship-building campaign. He knew that no matter how much weaponry and how many tanks, planes and trucks America built, the âArsenal of Democracyâ would be useless unless it could be brought in massive volume, and at breakneck speed, to troops fighting overseas. About The Author: Doug Most is a veteran journalist in Massachusetts, author of three books, and now the Executive Editor and Assistant Vice President at Boston University. When he's not working, he might be found running the streets of Needham, Mass., shooting threes in his weekly pickup basketball game, binging shows like "The Americans" and "Breaking Bad" and "Luther" with his wife, trying to convince his kids to spend six minutes with him, or walking his friendly hound. Experience the worldâs most famous love story through movement, sound, and play with Lanes Coven Theater Co, a founding partner of Gloucester Center for the Arts. This isn't a lectureâit's an interactive workshop that uses theater techniques to bring Shakespeare's language to life. This four-class series, taught by Justin Genna & Lily Narbonne, uses theater and acting tools to help participants understand Romeo & Juliet and the overall rhythm of Shakespearean language. You do not have to be an actor to participate! These lessons are based on pedagogy originally designed for students in English Language classes. Every class consists of a warm-up, game, exercise, and main activity. For the best experience, we recommend being available for all four dates. Registration required. In their program âThe Railroad in Song,â acoustic duo Jon and Li Waterman take listeners on a tour of songs about trains, the building of the railroad, workers on the railroad, train wrecks, heroes and hobos. The program looks at the Transcontinental Railroad, the contribution of Chinese and Irish immigrants, the stories of Casey Jones and John Henry, the Old 97 train wreck, the Great migration and more. The show consists of songs, history, and an accompanying slide presentation. Jon and Li Waterman Musician and songwriter Jon Waterman has been performing his original songs along with blues, rock and country standards throughout his life. His music is influenced by intriguing characters and stories from history, the roots of the music he loves, and the diversity of the human experience. His song âSultanaâ which tells the story of the Civil War steamboat disaster was selected to be featured at the Sultana museum in Marion, AR. Waterman has presented his programs âA Journey Through the Roots of American Popular Musicâ and âCro-Magnon Blues: History and Legends Through Songâ in venues around the country, both in person and virtually. He has an M.A. in Popular Music History from Prescott College. Li is a classically trained guitarist and singer who formerly fronted the Rhode Island band Alien Tesh. She is also an artist and graduate of Museum School in Boston. Questions? See More and Register Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewartâs book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Womenâs Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. Conjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinaryâfrom traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemimaâs Pancake Mix, to the original magic of Disneyâs The Little Mermaid (2023), and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean. From the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history, sourcing letters from the enslaved, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics. The Conjuring of America is a love letter to the real magic Black women used, their herbs, food, textiles, song, and dance, used to sow rebellion, freedom, and hope. Join our new local history discussion group in the Local History Center led by local history librarian, Julie Travers, and historian and author, Bob Booth. Each month we'll have a short presentation and then open it up for discussion. February Topic: The Haskells' Battle Against Slavery - A Glimpse into a Frought Era A West Gloucester farmer from an old line Cape Ann family was a local leader of the anti-slavery movement during the decades leading up to the Civil War. What can we learn from archival sources about Thomas S. Haskell, his colleagues and his very public stands and who stood in opposition to his beliefs? How did the national debate over slavery, and related causes such as temperance and suffrage, manifest on Cape Ann? ____________________________________________ The History Exchange is a Gloucester-centric approach to understanding the past and its meanings. Often, American historyâas taught or encountered in the mediaâis presented as something that occurred elsewhere: remote both in time and distance, and conducted by the famous and powerful. That is one way to look at the past, but it may mean little to us in our own time and place. Fortunately, Gloucester has an identity and history of its own. There is virtually nothing that has happened in America that did not involve Gloucester people or find an echo in Gloucesterâs own story. In some instances, Gloucester has led the way, and its people have been among the change agents regionally, nationally, and worldwide. The Gloucester History Exchange: Local History Discussion Group will explore and discuss events and people in Gloucesterâs history, particularly those that are not well known. Brief presentations will be made by subject-matter experts, followed by conversations. Experience the worldâs most famous love story through movement, sound, and play with Lanes Coven Theater Co, a founding partner of Gloucester Center for the Arts. This isn't a lectureâit's an interactive workshop that uses theater techniques to bring Shakespeare's language to life. This four-class series, taught by Justin Genna & Lily Narbonne, uses theater and acting tools to help participants understand Romeo & Juliet and the overall rhythm of Shakespearean language. You do not have to be an actor to participate! These lessons are based on pedagogy originally designed for students in English Language classes. Every class consists of a warm-up, game, exercise, and main activity. For the best experience, we recommend being available for all four dates. Registration required. Please register for each workshop separately. Dates are 2/14, 2/28, and 3/7. Space is limited.
